Diary of a Fat Man

I've Got First Class Tastes In a Second Class Town

11/10/2006 8:35:42 PM
Thanks to everyone for the kind words, thoughts, and prayers.  Laurie is back home now and trying to recover.  She's in a lot of pain, but hopefully that will subside as the days go on.

The hospital we went to (it was actually their Surgical Center which is a separate facility from the main hospital) was super swank.  Very clean; very nice.  The staff was phenomenal.  They even had free Starbucks coffee and cookies out in the lobby.  The food was really good and it was like room service--you ordered it when you wanted it.  I was all kinds of jealous of Laurie's morphine drip, but it barely took the edge off of her pain.

All of the third-grade teachers that Laurie works with came by tonight after we came home and gave her a little gift bag that had some socks, lotions, and a Chili's gift card for us to use to buy dinner tonight so that we didn't have to cook.  They are all super sweet and it was such a thoughtful thing to do.  It's almost unfathomable how different her experience has been in the school district she's in now, compared to Dallas schools.

Christ...I'm starting to sound all homo and shit.

Well, I need to go help Laurie go to the bathroom and then get her some food.

THIIIIIRRRRD GRRRAAAAADE??

she teaches the THIRD GRADE?!! no wonder all her compadres are (by your accounts) drunken ho's. have you ever been in a third grade classroom? that was the year my son got kicked out of school. i would have ruptured a disc too, or just gone postal, if i were dealing with those janky-ass mother fuckers.

glad the surgery went well. of course, all that caffeine and sugar kept you from a soporiphic, drooling waiting-room couch stupor, but who am i to accuse starbucks of entertaining an ulterior motive?

enough sardonicism

good to hear you're posting from the nursing front. i hope the pain on her part is an indicator that things went well. time will tell--steal some morphine for me.

p.s. some young guys fantasize about assisting girls with their bathroom duties.....:"i'm just heading to the restroom.."

"can i help?"

Yeah, it's good to have working people that actually care about what goes on.  When my mom died I received fruit baskets and people brought food over and everything - People really like me at work - who knew?  Glad Laurie is recovering.

I hope she has a quick recovery!

Glad to hear the surgery went well but sorry that she's in so much pain!  Tell her to take the pain pills 1/2 hour to 1 hour before the next dose is due and it might help keep the pain from becoming too much for the pills to help.

Wish I could send you a casserole to help out but you are about 3 hours too far away.  I'll send my good wishes for a speedy recovery for Laurie and prayers for you to make it through all the bathroom trips, get me a drink's, no I can't have sex yet's, isn't it time for a another pain pill dear's, etc.  I know you both will come thru with flying colors.

Hey Chris, glad to here Laurie's surgery went well.  Hope she gets over the pain soon. Oh, man I mean the surgery not you.  Hey you're not sounding homo.  Just real f*cking GAY.  Take care man.  Best to the family.

Like the rest I also wish Laurie a fast and smooth recovery!

Sounds like you're being Good Husband :)

I too had immediate thoughts of mouth hygiene when Sawyer and Kate got together - BLECH!

The one and only time I had a morphine drip, I hated it.  When I tried to sit up my eyes rolled back in my head and I started to gag.  In between trying to pass out, moaning and swallowing like crazy so I wouldn't throw up, I realized that the last thing I wanted to do was press that pump button to receive more morphine.  (by the way....what's up with that teeny, tiny, kidney shaped, throw up dish that they give you?  That is a real joke!  It might have the capacity to hold some well directed drool)    If that is a wonderful high, I definitely don't want any part of it.  BLECH!!

We will keep Laurie in our prayers and send lots of good wishes her way.  Will you be going by, "Nurse Chris" from now on??   ;)

Hopefully your lack of posting does not indicate that all is NOT going well!   Laurie will be in my thoughts... and you too as I am sure you will have an extra burden on your shoulders for a bit.
